Disney’s (live action) Aladdin – A Review

This was a real disappointment. Disney seems to clutching at old favourites in the hope of reigniting some kind of magic in a new younger audience. In my opinion it would be far better for them to do special edition re-runs of the old classics with maybe a few bonus features.

This film was bad. The acting was wooden. I felt like I was watching a high-school drama production with budget everything. With Agra they tried so desperately to make it look like the animation that it look unrealistic and the same can be said about the costumes. I wonder if the set or costume designers ever bothered to truly delve into the art, fashion and architecture of the Middle East.

Not a single actor seemed invested in their role and the biggest name of them all was probably the worst. Will Smith look as if he was unsure of his character, his lines, his delivery… everything. I guess with the daunting task of filling Robin Williams shoes one can almost understand.

Still with Disney being Disney, surely somebody did a quality check before signing off on the release of this movie? With the Live-Action version of the Lion King due for release within a matter of weeks, I can’t help but wonder if Disney decided to place all the real attention on The Lion King – arguably it’s most successful story and left Aladdin to go on with less attention to detail – less passion.

Out of 5, I would have to score this adaptation as a very sad 2… and that is being generous.
